“Happy” is billed as an inspired book by Fearne Cotton about her battle with depression and how to keep the illness at bay. It is said to be full of ideas and practical exercises to help you join her on her journey. In her own words “Happiness, you gorgeous ray of sunshine. I love it when you spring up out of nowhere and take me by surprise and how you can make the clouds part and corners of mouths lift…”
Aesthetically I found the book difficult to read. I understand its to be used as a workbook and to be referred back upon. However, reading from start to finish, I found the interrupted paragraphs quite irritating. Maybe just me…. I found the language quite cleverly written as I could picture Fearne Cotton actually speaking. The odd profanity crept in from time to time.
If you’re new to Self Help books, I feel you would find “Happy” helpful and readable. Unfortunately for me, I had read it all before and it didn’t tell me anything new. The celebrity interviews were interesting but also highlighted how privileged these people are. If they’re struggling, what chance do us mere mortals have.. There were vague references to people within Fearnes career who had contributed to her distress and I found myself distracted, wondering. Maybe Keith Lemon and his extreme teasing on Celebrity Juice … and why wasn’t Holly mentioned as they’ve always been BFFs, you get my drift. It distracted from the important message at hand.
In summary, its a commendable effort from someone with a public voice to get a taboo subject out in the open. The exercises are great and recommended by other Self Help Gurus, so nothing particularly new there. Great read for a beginner.
I, however, continue my quest for something different. A new approach, alternative ideas. Maybe I’ll write a book myself….. one day lol
Til next time, toodles.
