Today me and my mum decided to go on a guided walk in the City Of London. We both had a 20 minute train journey and met in a major London Station. 20 minutes! Why don’t we do this more often we ask ourselves. It was a beautiful sunny day, which really helped.
The walk was designed so that you would see the Old Roman London Wall… we’d often seen about it at the Museum Of London so were quite interested to see it. We embarked at The Tower Of London, in another lifetime I had worked in a bank in Minories, so I knew the area a little. How wrong was I! So much had changed, but I was thrilled to see the little things that hadn’t changed and was transported right back to a time before I had familial responsibilities. And how I made the most of my time back then.
We continued our adventure, finding the old buildings blended with the new, and getting a little lost…. hehe. And then it happened, by complete surprise, we came across a lake in the middle of the city. Backed by the Old London Wall. It blew my mind. I read lake in the blurb for the walk and thought they were having a laugh, yet here it was. At nearly 50 years old, this home town of mine had still surprised me.

So that got me thinking, how many of us know our home town? We are eager to visit other countries or cities and we want to see and experience everything, but not what’s on our doorsteps.
Maybe a way to love ourselves is to explore where we live or where we come from. Get to know our own environment, learn to love it and respect it and not be so eager to escape. I bet there’s lots of your current area you know nothing about. Make this summer the year you become a tourist in your own town.
We completed our walk at St Pauls Cathedral and St Barts Hospital. We only had bad memories of visits to my dear Dad when he was in that hospital. It was cathartic for me and mum to go and see the local landmarks that we hadn’t had chance to see at that time so we’ve also made new memories today.

We rounded off the day with a little shopping trip but we both agreed we’d had a great adventure and will look out for more places to visit. If you would like to follow the same walk we did the link is https://livinglondonhistory.com/londons-ancient-roman-and-medieval-walls-a-self-guided-walk/

I’d love to hear about places you have visited so please comment below so I can check them out. Hope you’re having an amazing summer now its finally started.
Until next time
